Children Photography | Centreville | Photographer | Family Photo |Our latest 5* Review on Wedding Wire…
Although we do quite a big of children photography in our Sterling, VA and Centreville, VA studio, as a Photographer I have to save my favorite type is a Family Photo of everyone all together. Especially with a special NEW family, it warms our heart to take an image of the first day of their new family all together.
Here’s one that made us smile…and cry…it explains WHY we love Nikki and Mike, the latest in our list of kewl clients…

Nikki and Mike
I think I have started this review at least a hundred times and always fail to capture the impact Mindy and Joriana had on my wedding experience. Not just the photography- the experience was and the images are amazing- but the overall start to finish and beyond impact. Our immediate impression of M&J was one of comfort and ease. They are relaxed and approachable, like old friends. We instantly clicked which is so important when selecting a photographer; their purpose is to capture your experience, emotion and event so that you have it for your “ever after”. They are all about you and what is important to you. Having a good personal connection lets them really get to know you so they can capture the images that will generate an emotional reaction 5, 15, 30 years later when you look back at your photos/album/images.
Weddings in general are overwhelming. Mindy and Jori know their profession and the wedding “business” which is important when YOU need a sanity check! On several occasions, Mindy helped me break it down, sort it out and make it manageable when faced with challenges, big and small.
Their work is amazing. I was looking for “traditional with a twist”- I didn’t know that at the time but looking back that is exactly what I wanted! I wanted interesting, fun and unique images from a rather traditional wedding. They did not disappoint!! The “first look” concept is brilliant. The technical skills M&J bring to your images make you say “WOW, I didn’t know I could look like that!!” or, “How did you do that??” Mindy just smiles with a little wink- she’s got you covered.
Weddings are a one-time deal, there are no do-overs or take backs. Doing it right and capturing the experience the first time and forever is of utmost importance. Mindy and Jori just get “it” they instinctively know what is important, they listen, provide stellar guidance and are truly good people, amazingly talented and professional. They were simply the best choice for our wedding… and after shoot… and girl’s session… and boudoir session (they haven’t quite talked me into that yet :o)… and whatever we may need in the future, they will be our choice.
I can’t thank them enough for their talent, guidance, and friendship OH!! and the most amazing wedding images EVER!!! You can’t go wrong with these ladies, they are top notch professionals and good people. Best of Luck!!!

Here’s our notes about the image:
“Carly and Jonathan were married at the Hartwood House, in Hartwood, Virginia. These childhood sweethearts had a lovely wedding filled with the love of family and friends. This image was taken at Carly and Jonathan’s wedding during the speeches. Carly’s father was giving the toast and said something that brought this look to the bride’s face – as you can surmise, she was surprised that he shared this bit of info during his toast.”
Thanks for Carly and Jonathan for not only being such a lovely couple to work with, but for allowing us to document your day with images like these!

Family Photographer| Oakton | Virginia | Jennifer & Daniel
As a Family Photographer, I photograph all over Virginia — in Oakton, VA, in Sterling, VA — even in Vienna. While we love photographing families, we have a special fondness for weddings and engagement sessions.
Washington, DC and Northern Virginia are both popular locations for engagement, wedding and Day After Sessions with Ever After Portraits. As part of our wedding photography collections, you not only hire two wedding photographers, who specialize in wedding photojournalism or capturing the emotion of the moment, you are hiring wedding photojournalist who LOVE to capture the essence of the connection that two people share.
When you ask them, their stories are completely different.
Dan swears that she asked HIM out.
A smile lights Jen’s eyes as she assure you that that is just not true… she was discussing dinner with friends and being the type of girl she is, she felt it would just be rude not to include him. And so she did.
Two different stories definitely converge as memories of their shared history starting with those first few moments have grown into a certainty that this is the one person they see forever with.
If she had to pick out the moments when she knew…it was quite easy…when he sang Disney songs with her…when he was able to love her in all her glory and fill her days with fun…last Christmas, with her family, she knew that he felt like family.
If you ask them, they will say…it just fit.
We think it fits, too — and we are so happy to be the photographers that have the privilege and honor to document this unique love that just fits.
Watch thier montage and let us know if you agree!

Portrait Photography Studios |Fair Oaks|Family Portrait Studios | Our Outdoor Studio | Ashley and Patrick
Portrait photography studios in the Sterling, Fair Oaks or general DC area are each unique and each one has an area they prefer to photograph at. We love taking photographs outside in our family portrait studios — our outdoor studio is perfect for families or couples who want relaxed and natural photographs.
Engagement images usually take place before the Wedding day. Ashley and Patrick chose to have their engagement photography done in the suburbs near Washington, D.C. in our fabulous Northern VA outdoor studio. We also do Weddings and Portraits in the Washington D.C. metro area.
So, I had a little bit of a harder time than usual picking out a song for Ashley and Patrick’s engagement montage. Now, yes, I could have easily used a boring love song that can possibly describe every couple on this planet, however, I wanted it to be really special and unique to them especially since I know how important music is to them.
When we first met with Ashley and Patrick, we hit it off right away. Not only were they the coolest couple, but we liked the same music! I know this may not seem like a very big deal but you try finding someone who knows bands from ‘The Used” to ‘The Maine’ all the way to ‘Mayday Parade’. And it’s even harder to find TWO people that love that kind of music. Suffice to say, we were in love with these two. We kept our fingers crossed hoping that Patrick and Ashley would choose us to photograph their wedding and ta-da, they did! I can’t even begin to say how excited we were!
The engagement session was awesome. The weather was perfect, and the images, if I may say so, turned out amazing! We couldn’t have done it without a laid back couple like Ashley and Patrick who were content to let us capture the essence of their love for each other. Isn’t their ease with each other shown in the love on their faces?
The song I chose for their engagement slideshow is: Your Song by Mayday Parade. It’s not a traditional love song but I thought it fit because I know that bonding over similar music choices was a big reason Ashley and Patrick fell in love with each other. This song tells the story of two lovers who can’t wait to one day be united forever. Poetic, right? Since the wedding day is fast approaching!
Now, that brings us to the present day. The engagement session is done. The guest album designed. The last thing we have to do is share our vision of what we saw when we documented their love story!
Ashley and Patrick, weI really, really hope you like not only the song but the images we were able to capture of you two just being yourselves (in love).
We can’t wait to photograph your wedding!!

Portrait photography |Fairfax| Family Portrait Studio| Professional Photographer vs. Hobbyist/Uncle Bob
Regarding Portrait photography in the Fairfax area, we love are generally a family portrait studio, so please read the following post with those thoughts in mind.
Before we get started, I’d like to start off defining the above terms.
Professional photographer: This is someone who is an expert in the field in question. Websters defines it as: a person who earns a living in a sport or other occupation frequently engaged in by amateurs: a golf professional, an expert player, as of golf or tennis, serving as a teacher, consultant, performer, or contestant; pro.
Hobbyist: This is someone who enjoys photographing people, places and things, but doesn’t quite have the expertise to be a professional. Websters says a hobby is an activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation and not as a main occupation:
Uncle Bob: This is someone who thinks they’re a professional, but in reality, is a hobbyist.
Now, to the good stuff! Let me first start out by saying that we’re in NO way trying to knock the hobbyist, or even Uncle Bob. We started out as hobbyists. You must love what you do, right? However, once we decided to make the hobby a profession, we got educated. We took classes. Lots and LOTS of classes. As a matter of fact, we take classes every year that are specifically for professional wedding and portrait photographers. It’s from these classes and many other things that we were able to learn the “art” of photographing weddings. The images we’ve selected will give you a brief overview of some things to think about when hiring a professional photographer.
Emotion:
Take a look at the image below. This is an image of Ashley and Ryan during their first dance. The look on her face really says it all. Less than a year after this image was taken, Ashley’s husband passed away unexpectedly. Although we deeply wish that Ryan was still here, it eases the pain a little to know that Ashley has images such as the ones below; images that truly capture how she felt on her wedding day for her to remember always.
When you hire a professional photographer, that’s one of the things you should definitely see reflected in their work — a true professional knows how to capture the emotion of the moment, so that no matter what happens, you’ll always have those images, and quintessentially, those emotions are kept safe for all time.

Decor:
The venue and decor are probably two of the most expensive things you will purchase for your wedding day. Your decor is, most likely, something you would want chronicled in your wedding album. And on the big day, you’re probably not going to be drooling over the opulent lighting setup or the perfectly sprinkled rose petals that decorate the aisle, it IS something that you’re not going to want to forget.

Techniques:
The image below is from Katherine and YuKwan’s Wedding. It’s one of my favorites from the day of the wedding. Now, be warned, because I’m about to geek out. Notice how the sun doesn’t look like a big blob of glowing whipped cream that’s been plopped down in the middle of the image. This is a special technique we learned in one of the courses mentioned above. This requires you to do some special things with your camera to have this cool “star effect” in your images. Did I mention that this is a technically hard image to do? This was shot during sunset which means the light is constantly changing. They’re also backlit, meaning the sun is to their back — so if I didn’t light them correctly, they would be completely silhouetted. End of geek session. Thank you for listening!

Reflection:
This is not necessarily to say that every photographer should have a good use of reflection, but it’s just so cool! Why wouldn’t you want that?!? This is what we call the infinity reflection. This is just something that we found very cool at this specific venue. Does your photographer have a good eye? Can they take something that seems everyday and turn it into something extraordinary?

Sunet:
Sunset images are some of my favorite to capture. But like I mentioned before, they’re technically harder to capture. Ever single second the sun is going down which means your light is always changing. Ratios are constantly changing so your photographer’s head is constantly calculating their ambient light output versus artificial light. The correct ratio lets you capture images like the one you see below.

Rings:
The ring shot. This is probably the most expected technique of any professional photographer. Did you know you have to have a special lens to take images like the one seen below? To get the look below, we had to take a little votive candles and space them the right distance behind the ring. Too close and it would look like little aliens coming to abduct (little pinpoints of light), too far and they would be pointless. Your fiance took lots of time and money to pick out that gorgeous rock of yours. Why not have it documented correctly?

Sequences:
Notice the next four images. These are called sequential images. They tell a story. I cannot say enough how important this is!! Your wedding album is what you have after everything is said and done. You’re most likely not going to wear your dress again, you will have your husband, and you will have your wedding album. Do you want your album to be like a yearbook? Or would you rather have your album designed to tell a story? Your story. The ability to design an album is truly an art, and is an expertise that is valuable and is part of the value of your wedding photographer.

Composing the image:
Composition of an image can define your entire photography experience. Perhaps you would like to look a few pounds lighter? Maybe you want to look like you have a few more curves? Standing certain ways and your photographer shooting at certain angles can make you look heavier or thinner, taller or shorter — actually, it can do all of the above and more! Still, you need to feel comfortable, and that is where interaction with your photographer comes in. If you are not comfortable, you won’t look comfortable in your photograph. That’s why it is so important to have a connection with your photographer, so you will feel at ease in front of the camera. And if they do have to pose or prompt you for a shot or two, they can make you feel and look your best.

Location:
Guess where this image was taken! Still can’t figure it out? This was taken in the bathroom of one of our venues. Can you tell? No, not really. Not all cool locations are found because they scream, “take a photo here”. That’s part of the value of a professional photographer, too — can they find cool, creative locations that make you look like a million bucks?

Motion:
Another technique that can be a very cool way to have your wedding images captured is with motion. This is an image from Sunee and Spencer’s wedding. It’s also not the easiest technique to master since humans were designed to move every time their heart beats.

Memories are priceless. And unlike material things, memories grow more valuable as time goes on. Please be sure to keep these points in mind when you are in the search for a professional photographer.
What do you want YOUR memories to look like?
Best,
