The Gore family came to visit our outdoor studio at the beginning of November. Aaditi and Sameer brought their adorable 2 1/2 year old daughter. Arya is an active little girl who enjoys playing outside on the playground, reading and taking dance classes. The family loves to travel as they go on vacations to such exciting places as Chicago and Hawaii.

Try this one little tip the next time you are taking a picture with your camera phone: Shoot with the light behind you! When the light is behind you, then it is illuminating your subject. Getting your subject well lit not only makes for a better picture, but helps tremendously with the crispness and quality of the image.

If you are shooting indoors, put the window behind you. If you are shooting outdoors, the sun or a bright sky should be behind you.

This little tip may seem simple but it can mean the difference of a “make it” or “break it” shot.

Many people have the choice of two types of photographers. One is the professional who has often many years of training, has experience and all the right tools. The second is what we call “Uncle Fred,” the more amateur version, often a close friend or relative with a fancy camera and shoots everything on auto. While deciding between the two, there are a few things we ask you to keep in mind.

A professional photographer might charge a bit more, but they are worth every penny. As professionals, they understand one of the most important concepts of photography, which is lighting. A well-lit image makes the shot, while an under-exposed or poorly lit one breaks it.

Another thing a professional does well is posing. “Uncle Fred’s” poses can sometimes be awkward, while your professional has experience in making you feel comfortable and natural.

And finally, compare the editing process. Professionals have editing software and training to correct skin tones and make color pop, while “Uncle Fred” does not. The editing software, many say, is half of the art. A well trained Photoshop user is priceless when it comes to retouching or bringing out the color in your images.

And last, but definitely not least: Have a favorite wild and crazy colorful scarf? Add it to a solid outfit and give it some extra pizzazz.

Ever want to stretch your personal photography skills? One way to shoot more creatively with your camera is with storytelling.

When you’re shooting an event or activity, tell the story from beginning to end with snapshots. Here’s an example: Let’s say you’re baking cookies with your kids. You might shoot the kids getting all the ingredients out and lined up. Then take a shot of them breaking the eggs into the bowl. You might also want to snap a shot of them mixing up the dough and with flour on their noses. Don’t forget a shot of them licking the spoon too! Of course, you will want pictures of the final product, the cookies being enthusiastically dunked into milk!

This is a really fun way to grow your creativity, while capturing some great at-home family memories at the same time!
