Masterpiece Framed Black & White Fine Art Portraits | Northern VA Family Photographer

Fine art photography weaves the fibers of your story together as art. It elevates the quality of photography from ordinary to extraordinary. Working with the Laino family at our indoor and outdoor studios In Northern VA, not far from Bluemont, VA, has given us the opportunity to create beautiful artwork for this lovely family of three. It has been our honor to capture their memories and to stop time through portraiture for them.

The first time she came to us, Michelle knew that with both daughters in high school, empty-nester days weren’t far away. So, she turned to our portrait studio to help her capture memories she knew she would treasure for a lifetime. We have done family, individual, and senior portraits for this wonderful family of women. We are delighted whenever we hear from Michelle to schedule a portrait session! Getting to know these lovely ladies has been a lot of fun.

When it came time to order portraits following one of their sessions, Michelle chose two of our finest-quality professional products.

Masterpiece Framed, Rembrandt Canvas Finish

For the individual portraits of her beloved girls, Michelle chose our highest-quality framing option: Masterpiece Framed with a painted Rembrandt finish. It is a stunning frame option for these beautiful portraits of her daughters!

Multi-Portrait Collection in Steel Finish

For the multi-portrait collection she selected, Michelle chose the Contemporary Frameless Steel Finish. The sleek, gray-metal finish is an elegant but understated look. It brings out the best in the black and white pictures.

Both finishes coordinated with the portraits and her home’s decor. Even more, the frames and portraits are guaranteed to last for many decades to come. Michelle, and later her daughters, will have these portraits to enjoy for a lifetime.

How to Dress for a Black and White Portrait Session | Northern VA Family Photographer

How to Dress for a Black and White Portrait Session | Northern VA Family Photographer

Let’s talk black and white portraits! This style of family photos can be an excellent way to obtain a more dramatic portrait. If you know that you would like your wall art to be black and white, then we can offer you some tips for how to dress to maximize the look of this style. Almost two decades of photography work in the Waterford, VA area have taught us a bit about picking outfits for this particular style of portrait.

Contrast

In black and white photography, contrast rather than color is what adds depth and interest. Creating the right balance between light and dark is important. If the background is dark, it’s usually best if you wear something lighter, so you don’t disappear into the background. The reverse goes for a light background. We can discuss in advance the best background to use depending on where we plan on doing your portraits.

Clothing

While contrast is necessary, we prefer that the color of your clothes contrast slightly – rather than dramatically – from your skin tone. If there is a lot of contrast, then we lose your face as the focus of the picture.

Does the color of your clothing really matter?

Color takes on a very different meaning in a black and white portrait. It becomes more about hues or shades of gray. We usually recommend you do not wear solid white or black unless we’re going for a particular look, but we will discuss that in greater detail when you schedule your portrait session with us.

Lines and Texture

With black and white photography, the lines and texture of your clothes can add interest. Texture works much better than bold or strong patterns in black and white photography.

What to Wear

Deciding on what to wear for a group picture can be tricky, but don’t be dissuaded. The results can be priceless. Select similar but not the same colors and styles! As photographers, we recommend coordinating outfits rather than perfectly matched outfits.

Ideas

Lastly, we’re always happy to provide ideas and suggestions for your next black and white family portraits.

Below are a few examples of different Black and White Sessions, from the relaxed to the dramatic.

Which should you choose, Black & White or Color? | Northern VA Family Photographer

Which should you choose, Black & White or Color? | Northern VA Family Photographer

As a busy portrait photography studio in the Fairfax, VA and Sterling, VA areas, clients often ask us which is better: black & white photography or color photography. Great question! Complicated answer!

Color is Great!

Color photography can convey the vibrant colors of an image. A floral bouquet comes alive in a photograph. A rainbow cuts colorfully through a landscape in a color picture. For some photos, the color contributes to the story. Without it, you wouldn’t be able to convey the same emotions.

But Black & White is Drama!

Oh, the contrasts provided by black and white photography! Gone is the distraction of colors. The eye focuses on the imagery instead. The play of light and shadow provide intensity, and the viewer is drawn into the drama of the picture without distraction.

Which is Better?

As photographers, we’ve just laid out the simple descriptions of both styles, but we haven’t answered which is better. That’s because we can’t! There is no standard answer. We believe that most of the time, the picture itself can help you decide.

Photographers will tell you that most photos will lend themselves to either black and white or color. Removing the color from an image means removing color as an element of the story. On the other hand, if you remove color from a picture and it’s bland, flattened by its lack of color, that’s your answer. That particular photo needs to be in color because the color was too important to its story.

With black and white portraits, you can still capture intensity and drama – you’re just doing it without color! You can compensate for the lack of color by adjusting some of the contrast and shadows for depth and interest. Black and white photography is raw. Great black and white can capture a subject at its most colorless but its most interesting. Many photographers choose to specialize in black and white photography because they believe it best draws a viewer’s attention to that which is relevant in the picture.

So although there is no standard answer, it all depends on what you want the focus to be in your portrait! Some portraits lend themselves to color and some to black and white. At times it comes down to simply a matter of your personal choice.

With almost two decades as a leading portrait photography studio in the Fairfax, VA and Sterling, VA areas, we’d be happy to answer your questions about black and white photography versus color for your own family portraits. Contact us today!

Photography is an art in which style changes quickly, and commonalities change frequently. It seems like the one constant in photography style is black and white – which is a way to remove the style and leave the moment. Many people refer to black and white as “timeless.” This is because (more…)
