8 Places Along the Virginia Coast for great pictures! | Northern VA Family Photographer

Where do you like to take pictures along the Virginia Coast? Do you have any favorite places? As a full-service studio photographer near Round Hill, VA, we certainly do, but we’re always on the hunt for more places. You know what we mean, little-known coastal gardens, sandy coves, quiet harbors, and picturesque beaches. It’s not easy to uncover secret spots given how populated our state is, but a list we found provides some worthy options.

If you have time, you can drive around our state and explore all 35 places featured in this article. However, we thought we’d highlight their coastal suggestions while we still have a few weeks of “warm” weather left, and while we’re waiting for the gorgeous fall colors to appear!

Spectacular opportunities for landscape and wildlife photography on the Virginia coastline

1 and 2. Chincoteague and Assateague Islands

Chincoteague, an island on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, is known for its population of wild ponies. The ponies actually reside next door on Assateague Island. While the ponies are a must-see, the seemingly endless miles of idyllic coastline and undeveloped land provide excellent opportunities for landscape and wildlife photography. Don’t forget the beautiful ocean encircling these beautiful islands! There’s something inherently beautiful with the combination of sea and portraits.

3. Tangier Island

Once the most isolated of the Eastern Shore barrier islands, Tangier has managed to maintain its charm – although some believe that’s beginning to change. You’ll see more bicycles than cars and more commercial fishing and crabbing than D.C. suits.

4. Virginia Beach

Most people associate Virginia Beach with hordes of summer crowds and tourists. They would be correct, but check out Sand Bridge and Croatan for surfing photography if the waves are up. On the Bayside, there’s Chick’s Beach and First Landing State Park for what might be just a tad bit quieter if not at least different than the busy beaches.

5. Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge

A bird watcher and photographers’ haven, every season offers something here. Although located at the very southern tip of Virginia Beach practically in North Carolina, it’s an important stop for migrating birds and a nesting place for several species including Bald Eagles and Osprey. There are tram tours and a relatively large photography blind.

6. Norfolk Botanical Garden

This is a world-class botanical garden with much to offer the photographer, especially the macro-photographer.

7. Fort Monroe

On the Chesapeake Bay, the Fort oozes history and beauty. It’s especially worthy for architectural and landscape photographers, but it’s a treasure for all types of photography.

8. Newport News Park

Wait until late October or November to visit this lovely city park for its spectacular fall foliage. In an area known for its state parks, this city park is worth a visit.

As a fine art and studio photographer we are always excited about talking shop with other photographers, especially near us in Round Hill, VA or Sterling, VA where we have our studios. If you have any tips for your favorite places to take pictures along the Virginia Coast, let us know! We’d love to check them out.

Family Portraits, The Limas | Northern VA Family Photographer

Not too long after moving his family from Miami to Northern Virginia, Kelvin decided it was time for portraits! He sought us out as a family photographer. When he first contacted us, our ears perked up immediately! We love hearing from the male in the family. It’s a different perspective than our typical client which is usually the woman. The Limas were delightful! We’re glad they are now our neighbors and that Kelvin contacted us to photograph his beautiful family.

Family of Four Outdoor Portrait Session

This family of four, with a sweet three-year-old girl, an adorable 10-month-old son, and a lovely mom, Caitlyn, seemed to radiate happiness and love with their infectious smiles. The late summer colors wrap around them, adding warmth and contrast to the white curves of the sofa and their blue clothing.

Kelvin told us he’d been searching for photographers because he realized it had been a while since they had done family pictures. He also wanted to be certain to capture his children at their cute ages right now. They didn’t have any professional pictures of Lucas, the youngest, even though he was almost a year old and was growing rapidly, and Nathalie’s portraits were last taken when she was 6-months old. The Limas were overdue for some family and individual portraits!

Wall Art

Although they were renting at the time, they were considering a collection of portraits to display in their home. They were looking for multiple pictures in varying sizes rather than one enormous portrait, which they said was a popular trend in Miami. It wasn’t too long before The Limas happily selected their favorite portraits from their session, choosing a lovely multi-portrait wall art collection and an album.

As a Purcellville, VA family photographer, we love clients who value photography and the role it can play in their lives. They get the importance of working closely with a photographer to receive the best possible results. We greatly enjoyed our session with this beautiful family!

The Psychology of Color | Northern VA Family Photographer

The Psychology of Color | Northern VA Family Photographer

The Psychology of Color | Northern VA Family Photographer

Do you know what the colors you wear say about you, your mood, or even your intelligence? As a professional photographer, we have a pretty good idea! We have had to learn about color applications as it pertains to photography and our clients’ clothing. Our Purcellville, VA and Potomac Falls, VA clients aren’t the only ones interested in color psychology and clothes.

If you’re thinking about doing your portraits this fall, here are a few things to consider about individual colors as you select your outfits. And, as always, if you have any questions, just ask us!

Pink

Pink is a tranquil and warm color. Unlike red which gets people excited, pink has been shown to calm aggression and be soothing. It’s a feminine color and wearing it can give off a gentler air. By the way, in the past pink was the color used for little boys, while blue was used for girls! Yes, gentlemen, you too look great in pink!

Red

There is a reason many restaurants use red: It has been shown to make you hungry! It’s also an energetic color evoking strength, power, and even aggression. Red is a color that will get you noticed.

Yellow

This is a happy color! It’s the color of the sun, after all. It represents optimism and can help you be more creative. It is associated with being cheerful and warm. Note how it’s a color often associated with schools and school buses.

Orange

A warm, bold color, orange is a great substitute for red. It represents ambition, depth, and fun.

Blue

Another calming color, blue has long been associated with the sea. It is considered one of the most popular colors on the spectrum. Although depending on its shade, it can be considered a cooler color, it’s also a very soothing color which is why it’s often used in hospitals and bedrooms. It’s also been shown to be associated with greater productivity because it evokes a feeling of calmness and focus.

Purple

Long known as the color of royalty, purple represents wealth, sophistication and wisdom. There’s a reason kings and queens have long used this color!

Black

If you want a powerful, somber color, then black it is. It evokes strength and seriousness as well as intelligence. Think of how many business suits are black or dark gray.

Green

A calming color, green is also the color of money, of course! Green is located at the center of the color spectrum making it a restorative and balancing color. Interestingly, it’s long been associated with the concept of peace and, of course, the Earth.

Gray

Actually a neutral, gray is reserved, quiet and conservative. It has a steadying effect on other colors around it, is seen as solid and stable, creating a sense of calm and composure, relief from a chaotic world.

Color can reflect mood, personality, and give off subtle messages, so you can use color to your advantage! Just for fun, if you’d like to learn more about color psychology, check out this article.

As a professional photographer in the Purcellville, VA and Potomac Falls, VA area, we are happy to help our clients select their clothing colors for their portrait session. Although the psychology of color is fun to think about, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident in your clothing! We work with our clients to coordinate each family member’s clothing so you’ll love your family portrait. If you want professional pictures, please contact us today to discuss our session!

Creating a Legacy Through Photography | Northern VA Family Photographer

Creating a Legacy Through Photography | Northern VA Family Photographer

Creating a Legacy Through Photography | Northern VA Family Photographer

Throughout our lives, we will experience moments which disappear in a whisper. Some will be memorable; others are lost in time. Those moments create and often define our lives. As a studio photographer, we often ask our Round Hill, VA and Purcellville, VA friends and clients:
• How do you document your life for your children?
• How do you capture the special times in your children’s lives so that you can remember those precious moments rather than losing them to time?

What would be your answers to these questions?

Given that you are reading this blog post, then it’s likely that you have given some thought to these types of questions. It’s also highly likely that you value the role of professional portraits and the difference an experienced studio photographer can make in documenting your family.

We’d like to take a closer look at these questions and their answers and offer some tips based on our years of experience as a professional studio photographer.

How do you document your child’s life for them?

Professional Photography

If you haven’t done so already, you should make professional photography a priority in your family life. Prioritize the scheduling of professional portraits of your children and family as often as you possibly can.

Some clients do professional portraits annually and then use those portraits for their holiday cards and to decorate their homes. Those families take advantage of using photography to show how the family has grown and changed over the years.

Other clients opt to work with a professional studio photographer every other year. Some also schedule professional sessions for significant life events such as maternity, newborn, high school senior portraits, engagements, and other important events.

Whatever type of professional session you schedule, the important thing is to schedule it!

Snapshots

Family snapshots can be considered the bread and butter of documenting your family’s or child’s life. Keep your camera or smartphone handy so that you can capture daily life at a split second’s notice. Your child hugging the dog, playing outside, dressed up for prom, and so forth, are great photo ops to capture in a way a portrait photographer cannot because we’re not there on a daily basis.

Don’t make the mistake many people do of reaching for the camera to find it’s out of battery! Keep your camera handy and charged! Smartphone cameras are more sophisticated than ever and take some great pictures, too!

Those everyday pictures will help you document your family and, especially, your child’s life.

Lastly, don’t leave your snapshots living inside your camera or computer where you can’t enjoy or see them regularly. It’s not unheard of for something to go wrong and you lose them. We know someone who lost more than 1,000 precious family photos because they hadn’t backed up their laptop! We recommend using a cloud-based storage as well as occasionally taking the time to create printed photo albums you can order of your pictures.

How do you document your life for your children?

What does that mean, you ask? How are you documenting the lives of parents, grandparents, and other ancestors who are the story of your children’s history? It is their family story, the story of their roots.

Documenting the stories of those that came before your children is a precious gift you can make for your child. They will be so grateful as adults, when you are no longer with them, that you took the time to do so. Those portraits, along with photo albums of your life or your parents’ lives, are one way to document your life for your children.

Through portraiture, you are creating a powerful visual legacy for your children. Don’t underestimate the value of today’s portraits to future generations in your family.

Record Your Life

As a studio photographer, we urge you to record your life.

You can’t go back in time to take portraits, so there isn’t much sense lamenting what is now behind you. But you can assemble your story now through professional family portraits taken across the generations moving forward. Make it a point to capture images of your family and relatives, particularly your parents, your children’s grandparents, now while you can. Those will one day be especially beloved and cherished!

If you’re feeling particularly ambitious, you can write down your family’s history for your children to carry forth with them for future generations. It gives them a sense of self to know their family’s history. As the old saying goes: Roots and wings are the most valuable thing you can give your children! Photography has a unique role to play in giving your children roots and wings.

However you decide to do it, doing something is what matters! Record your daily life through regular snapshots whether using a camera or a smartphone. Document whatever you can so long as you leave a legacy for your children.

We have never heard a client complain that they took too many pictures, bought too many professional portraits, wrote down too much information about the family’s story. In fact, we’ve heard the opposite: Not enough pictures were taken when their children were young, and they never bothered to ask parents and grandparents for details of the family’s history. Remember that history matters to the future not yet lived, not yet born
