We might be in the midst of winter’s short, dark days, but it’s time to start looking ahead to the splendor of spring and its opportunities! Our Outdoor Portrait Park
Winter’s chilly cloak will soon lift, and our 2.5-acre Outdoor Portrait Park once again welcomes our clients. You will have the entire park for yourselves without the interruption or hordes of strangers typical of public spaces.
Our idyllic park has been designed and groomed as an idyllic location for portraits. You can take advantage of our creek, ponds, rustic barn, charming rail fence or wooden bridge. The portrait park is decorated by nature’s bounty and draped in natural light. It is the perfect place to take outdoor photos!
Nature’s Stage
As the colors return to trees and flowers burst into bloom, spring offers photographers a fabulous stage and palette of colors. We love the warming temperatures and colors, and we know just how to take advantage of them for our clients. The dramatic browns of the forests give way to the richness of spring with lush foliage!

After several months of winter, children are ready to head outdoors! The milder days of spring haven’t yet given way to summer’s heat and humidity. Which should you choose, Black & White or Color? | Northern VA Family Photographer
As a busy portrait photography studio in the Fairfax, VA and Sterling, VA areas, clients often ask us which is better: black & white photography or color photography. Great question! Complicated answer!
Color is Great!
Color photography can convey the vibrant colors of an image. A floral bouquet comes alive in a photograph. A rainbow cuts colorfully through a landscape in a color picture. For some photos, the color contributes to the story. Without it, you wouldn’t be able to convey the same emotions.
But Black & White is Drama!
Oh, the contrasts provided by black and white photography! Gone is the distraction of colors. The eye focuses on the imagery instead. The play of light and shadow provide intensity, and the viewer is drawn into the drama of the picture without distraction.
Which is Better?
As photographers, we’ve just laid out the simple descriptions of both styles, but we haven’t answered which is better. That’s because we can’t! There is no standard answer. We believe that most of the time, the picture itself can help you decide.
Photographers will tell you that most photos will lend themselves to either black and white or color. Removing the color from an image means removing color as an element of the story. On the other hand, if you remove color from a picture and it’s bland, flattened by its lack of color, that’s your answer. That particular photo needs to be in color because the color was too important to its story.
With black and white portraits, you can still capture intensity and drama – you’re just doing it without color! You can compensate for the lack of color by adjusting some of the contrast and shadows for depth and interest. Black and white photography is raw. Great black and white can capture a subject at its most colorless but its most interesting. Many photographers choose to specialize in black and white photography because they believe it best draws a viewer’s attention to that which is relevant in the picture.
So although there is no standard answer, it all depends on what you want the focus to be in your portrait! Some portraits lend themselves to color and some to black and white. At times it comes down to simply a matter of your personal choice.

We love it when a potential client browses our website and decides to hire us based on our work and reputation! Molly contacted us last summer about our doing fine art portrait photography for her family of four in the Sterling, VA area. With an active 3-year-old Orion and 3-month-old Freya, they were excited about doing their first family portraits. We were excited about working with them!
Lively Family Outdoor Portrait Session
After searching for nearby photographers, Molly and Dave chose our portrait studio for their family portraits. This active family, and especially Orion, loves the outdoors. So, we introduced them to our wonderful outdoor portrait park. We are glad we did an outdoor session because it was a lot of fun to do with them. Orion was quite the ham, and a joy to photograph! This family’s love for each other and enjoyment of the outdoors was evident during their fun portrait session.
Children are always a joy to work with because it keeps us on our toes as photographers. Three-year-old and three-month-old siblings inspire us as photographers and as individuals. To us, children epitomize all that life represents: joy, laughter, and love. We work hard to capture their big, sincere personalities in their portraits!
The Garbers moved to this area just a few years ago. Molly told us they had plenty of open wall space in their home and they were hoping to fill some of it with family portraits from their session with us. As you can see from their pictures, we got some lovely portraits for them.
