1. Let your child help plan the outing for the two of you. By letting the child be involved in the decision process it will be more memorable for them. When the child chooses where to go and what to do it helps build their self esteem.
2. Going outside at this time of year is an easy and fun way to be together. Going on a walk or riding bikes is healthy way to spend time and enjoy the fresh air. Going to the farmer’s market or an outdoor concert can be relaxing and spontaneous. . If you are on vacation think of something different that is not part of your normal routine. For instance if you go to the beach and there is a boardwalk with an arcade or fun place for kids to play.
3. Kid dates do not always have to be planned. It can be a spur of the moment thing. A bedtime routine where the child gets to pick a special book to read with you. If you have two children and one child is an early bird and the other a night owl, take advantage to spend special time with each, when the other child is sleeping.
4. Go outside the box. If you have gone shopping, eating out and movies think of something different. Some ideas include going to the airport to watch planes take off and watch the luggage go around on the carousel. Taking a class that peaks your child’s interest. Something that involves a project that a child could take home to have and show to others. Check out local places in your neighborhood like a class at a community center or Home Depot.
5. Making it a tradition. Children need consistency. If you can fit in your schedule plan on a regular date on a monthly basis. This gives the child something to look forward to each month.

After this long winter, spring is finally here. Time to go out and enjoy quality time with the family while your children are on spring break from school. Don’t forget to bring your camera to capture those special moments!
Washington, DC is a great place to explore with kids. There are tons of things to do, here are suggestions from 15 Best Places to Go with Kids in the Washington DC Area.
One of the most kid-friendly places to visit in Washington, DC is the National Zoo where you can see more than 400 different species of animals. The National Zoo is set within the beautiful Rock Creek National Park and is a part of the Smithsonian Institution. Admission is FREE! Favorite animals include giant pandas, elephants, Komodo dragons, lions, giraffes, bears and orangutans. Daily programs include animal training, feeding demonstrations, and keeper talks. One of my favorite places to go is see the pandas to check out to see how Bao Bao is doing.
At this favorite Smithsonian museum, kids enjoy examining a wide variety of artifacts including an 80-foot dinosaur skeleton, an enormous prehistoric white shark, and a 45-and-a-half carat jewel a known as the Hope Diamond. The Discovery Room is a great hands-on display for young children. Feel the skin of a crocodile, examine the jaws and teeth of different animals or try on clothes from around the globe. Digital Images vs. Wall Portraits – Which Should You Choose? | Portraits

The currently popular trend in photography is to have photos taken and to then purchase the CD of the digital images for a small fee. This isn’t a new trend. In fact, if you think back I’m sure you’ll remember that somewhere in some box or drawer you have a CD of family portraits from a past portrait session.
Now for the hard question: Have you ever printed anything from that CD? Unfortunately, the truth is that for the majority of people, that CD is hidden away in a drawer and forgotten. Nothing is being printed or created from the images on that CD. You may as well hang the CD on your wall for all of the value you’re getting from those images!
Recordable media has changed much through the years, and no doubt it will continue to change. Most of us don’t remember the 8” floppies. However, many of us do remember the still-large 5.25” floppies which replaced them. Those in turn were replaced with the smaller 3.5” diskettes. Do you see a pattern here?
It’s virtually impossible to find any computer that will read the 8”, 5.25” or 3.5” diskettes any more. Now we have CDs and flash drives. But in all honesty, how long will it be until those too are replaced?
Recordable media also has a shelf life! If you pulled that old floppy or CD out of a drawer, would you be able to recover the images from it? Kurt Gerecke, a physicist and storage expert at IBM Deutschland GmbH had this to say, “Many of the cheap burnable CDs available at discount stores have a life span of around two years. Some of the better-quality discs offer a longer life span, of a maximum of five years.”
It is true that there’s also online storage, “the cloud.” Although that seems like a wonderful solution, any online storage system can be hacked! We all know that anything touted as “unhackable” has a long line of hackers behind the scenes figuring out a workaround. How safe are your personal family photos really?
Another thing to consider is: Online backup storage companies go out of business. How could you possibly recover your precious family photos from them if they went into bankruptcy, closed up shop and disappeared?
You don’t want to lose those amazing family images when you held your tiny newborn in your hands, or when your little girl was missing her front tooth but still smiled big and beautifully. These are fleeting moments which deserve to be treasured for years to come.

As Ever After Portraits, located near Lansdowne in Northern VA, we are family photographers. We know how very much family photos mean to you.
We find one thing to be a common thread among our clients — they CHERISH their families above all else! We think that’s why they choose to decorate their homes with the ones they love. Travis and Liz are both working professionals who took special time out to have a family portrait session in our warm studio during this cold Winter season. Liz and Travis even took time out of their busy schedules to sit down with us and plan what type of clothing they would choose for themselves and their two adorable kids, Gabby and Christopher, as well as discussing their home decor style. With this information, we styled their session to complement their lifestyle and their home.
Although some may feel that in-studio sessions tend to be stiff, formal and traditional, we threw that out the window with this wonderful family, and they made this session relaxed and fun, even with a Victorian couch as a prop! The image you see above is one of our favorite images from the entire shoot. Although we photographed the entire family on the couch, there was something about the emotion of this image that just made us want to smile. Gabby is definitely a Daddy’s girl, and we just think the two together are SUPER cute!
Travis and Liz loved their images so much that they bought a collection of art to adorn the walls of their home. We can’t think of a better way to decorate than with the ones you love the most. Don’t you think their Wall Art looks amazing on their wall?!
