Photography Tips & Tricks: Underwater Pictures | Northern VA Family Photographer
Photography Tips & Tricks: Underwater Pictures | Northern VA Family Photographer
We are continuing our Photography Tips and Tricks series! As a portrait photography studio here in Potomac Falls, VA we specialize in fine art photography, but we love to share tips with our clients for their personal pictures/snapshots. Summer might be drawing to a close, but you still have some weeks of great weather and warm (warmish?) water! Have you thought of using your phone for underwater pictures?
Unless you’re a professional underwater photographer with a photography studio and specialty equipment, you’re not going to have a camera you can simply dive with; however, don’t let that stop you!
Here are five tips for taking great underwater pics using your phone!
Waterproof your phone!!
1. There are two ways to do this: The cheap way is to encase it in a plastic baggy that is tightly sealed. It’s an old photographer’s trick for unexpected rainfall when shooting outdoors. It’s not easy to get great shots when you’ve covered your lens in plastic, but it is possible with practice! The somewhat more expensive way to shoot underwater is to purchase a waterproof case for your phone. If you plan on buying a waterproof case, make sure you do thorough research. Try reading reviews in trade journals!
Shooting underwater
2. We have to admit that this is going to take some practice so don’t wait until you need to shoot the picture to shoot it! Practice makes perfect, so try it ahead of time. While it can be difficult to see a camera’s screen, that’s not your biggest hurdle. You won’t be able to use the shutter button on your phone’s screen when you’re underwater. Fear not! You can use the volume buttons or on/off side buttons to shoot. Read through your camera’s manual for alternate ways to shoot pictures without using the on-screen button.
Get used to the light
3. Shooting underwater significantly affects how natural light will be reflected. Practice by shooting underwater at different times of day and in different lighting conditions such as sunny or cloudy days. You might have to play with the angle from which you are shooting depending on the angle of the light – although it’s obviously going to come from above you! For example, in the morning and evenings, the light tends to cast more of a spotlight effect underwater.
Be ready to shoot!
4. You can’t always stage an underwater photo session, now can you? Be ready! If you’re going snorkeling, then take a few practice shots to be sure your ready and then anticipate the sudden appearance of the giant turtle or swordfish (certainly not hoping for a shark in this one)! Underwater photography is like most photography. Be ready to shoot when the perfect shot presents itself, and don’t forget to take lots of pictures. It’s digital after all, and you can always delete them later.
The color of the seas
5. Underwater shots will not have the same colors as being outside the water. That’s a given. So work with what nature offers you. Keep in mind that it can be difficult to get the skin color as accurate as it would appear above water. If you’re the type who prefers colors to be as precise as possible, then consider printing your pictures in black and white or sepia. The effect can be more dramatic, and you’ve resolved the issue of bluish skin tones. There are also some apps available for phones to help you correct phone pictures.
Whether or not you are one of our regular portrait photography studio clients here in the Potomac Falls, VA area, if you have any questions about your photography, call us! We’re happy to help you. Meanwhile, be certain to practice water safety during your underwater photography shots!

What families are saying, The Gary Family | Northern VA Family Photographer
What families are saying, The Gary Family | Northern VA Family Photographer
Portrait photography in Northern Virginia can be such a thrill! We have worked with so many wonderful families through both baby photography and family photography. With our studio located in Potomac Falls, VA, near Lowes Island, VA we’re in a great location for families all across the area.
The Gary Family came to us in the fall for their family portrait session, and meeting this amazing family was a treat for us. The love Chad and Jennifer share with their beautiful sons was such a joy to capture! Our outdoor portrait park was the perfect backdrop for this energetic and loving family.
Making Families Happy Is Our Top Priority
“Chad and I can’t stop looking at these images! We are beyond excited and happy to have these family photos hanging on our wall. Who knew that there was such a thing as photo glass?! Amazing! I never get tired of looking at these pictures and looking through our album. We can’t say enough positive things about Ever After Portraits! We will cherish these photos forever. We look forward to another photo session in due time; hopefully, a generational photo session! Thank you, again, to you and Joriana for capturing such real, honest, and beautiful photos of our family!!” ~ Jennifer Gary

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly! | Northern VA Family Photographer
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly! | Northern VA Family Photographer
As a headline for a photography blog, “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” might have caught your attention! However, it’s not exactly what you might think. We thought we’d share some portrait photography studio stories from here in the Potomac Falls, VA area!
The Good
There are so many things that are good about being photographers! Where do we start? Without a doubt, the best thing is our relationship with our clients. They are the backbone of our business and the reason we do what we do!
We love to photograph families who have never had a custom, wall-art experience. Their reactions when they come in to view their slideshow of completed portraits are gratifying and validate our work as photographers. Our clients often tell us that their portraits are far more beautiful than they expected. But, we already knew that; we could see the emotions on their faces!
The Bad and The Ugly
Luckily, there truly haven’t been many bad or ugly experiences! During our early years doing portrait sessions, we had a client purchase wall art where things did not go as we’d hoped. Unfortunately, when she took home her portrait, it did not fit the wall she had chosen in advance. Fortunately, there was another wall in her home for this special family portrait, but she was so disappointed – as were we! The last thing we ever want is for ANY of our clients to leave disappointed from an Ever After experience!
Soon after that, we invested in specialty design software to ensure no other client ever had the same experience. We no longer ask our clients to pull out the tape measure or to do what some want to do and guess at the size of a wall. Our clients can now tape our rule to the wall they’ve selected, take an iPhone photo of the wall, and text or email it to us. We upload that picture into our software, and when we are ready for the client’s viewing, we can show them exactly what any portrait would look like in various sizes on their wall! That’s technology put to truly good use!
Life is made up of experiences which become memories. Learning from our mistakes makes our lives better in the future. For Ever After, our “good” has far outweighed the bad and the ugly! If you’d like to work with a professional portrait photography studio in the Potomac Falls, VA area, we would love to work with you.

Are you preserving a photographic legacy for future generations? | Northern VA Family Photographer
Are you preserving a photographic legacy for future generations? | Northern VA Family Photographer
Beware the Missing Photos
In the era of Snapchat, selfies, and Instagram, it’s hard to imagine there aren’t enough pictures circulating the planet. And, yet, how many people invest in professional portrait photography? How many of them understand why it’s so important to do so? We know that the Potomac Falls, VA area isn’t immune to the ubiquitous digital snapshots which are so quickly discarded and valued so little. So, we thought we would look at the role portrait photography plays in helping you create a visual legacy to leave for future generations of your family.
Where are Your Pictures?
People snap pictures of everything, everywhere, and anytime! (A quick browse through Instagram and you’ll see why we say this!) But, where are those pictures? How many of those photos serve as a visual, high-quality documentary of your life? And, how many people take the time to print out their digital photos or to sit for professional portraits? The answer is: Few people bother to print out their snapshots or sit for pictures – and that’s a shame. Photographs, particularly professionally taken and printed ones, play a significant role in connecting us to future generations, including those we may never meet.
The most photographed, and photographing, generation in human history isn’t taking the time to record their memories through archival-quality portraits taken by experienced photographers. They have little to show for their thousands of pictures.
Technology and Its Role in Photography
Sadly, most pictures today reside inside an electronic gadget rather than displayed in our homes as fine art photography to enjoy for decades and in future generations. Rarely, are pictures printed out and saved in archival-quality albums or as art for our homes.
Last year, there were 2.6 billion smartphone subscriptions globally, and photo uploads total 300 million per day on Facebook alone! Imagine if just a fraction of those photos were the result of a professional photo shoot resulting in beautiful portraiture.
Digital photography, smartphones, and countless photography apps have changed how we think about photography, how we enjoy it, and even how we use it. However, it hasn’t changed the need for beautiful portrait photography. If anything, technology has highlighted the need to for it!
Use Portrait Photography to Document Your Life TODAY for Future Generations
Are you relying on your snapshots alone to document your life today for future generations? Or, are you investing in professional portrait photography to record your life TODAY for your children and grandchildren to enjoy in the future? Too many people don’t give much thought to the difference between the two, but we guarantee you that there are significant differences!
Consider this:
* How and when do you take pictures?
* Where do you store your pictures?
* How many pictures do you keep on your phone or laptop? (We’d guess that the younger you are, the higher the number goes.)
* How many of your digital pictures do you actually print, frame, and display to enjoy?
* How many of your digital pictures turn out nice enough to display with pride?
* Are you printing your photos on archival-quality, professional photo paper?
* When is the last time you had a professional portrait done by an actual portrait photographer?
These are essential questions for you to consider. If you haven’t taken time out of your busy life to sit down and do a family portrait, then there is a good chance you are missing out on the opportunity to create a photographic legacy for future generations in your family.

Family Portrait Photography
What do family portraits mean to you? How many treasured photos do you have of family members no longer with you? The old family portrait above exists for us today because many years ago someone decided to sit for it. They knew the importance of documenting and preserving their image through this photograph, which has lived on long after them. It’s tangible evidence for us today that they once existed and mattered to someone.
That portrait is part of OUR family’s photographic legacy. It is Mindy’s maternal grandparents, Joriana’s great-grandparents, Thomas and Belle, on their wedding day in 1909. Without that portrait, we would have no idea how very much like their mother the Langford daughters and granddaughters look! It means so very much to us to have this portrait.
Live Beyond Facebook and Snapchat
We’d like to help you live beyond the era of Facebook, Snapchat and disposable, smartphone photography. Beauty and longevity define the power of portrait photography, and we work hard to help our clients leverage that potential. Fine art professional photography becomes a family heirloom to be treasured for decades, well beyond our lives. The families and individuals we work with across Northern Virginia understand this. They seek us out to create and preserve their legacy through our portrait photography.
Contact our studio to start a true portrait photography legacy now with family artwork you’ll be proud and overjoyed to display on the walls of your home. It is a legacy you can pass down to your children and their children. We expertly print our portraits on museum-quality products rated to last 100-plus years.
If you live in the Potomac Falls, VA and surrounding region, contact us to schedule your family portrait photography today. It would be an honor to photograph you and your family!

What families are saying, Carrington & Tyler | Northern VA Family Photographer
What families are saying, Carrington & Tyler | Northern VA Family Photographer
Portrait photography is what we love! But we love making our clients happier even more! Carrington came to our outdoor portrait park studio in Potomac Falls, VA, with her son Tyler and her little dog Orchid, for a family portrait session. For this family session, she wanted professional photography, and we were so pleased that she chose us!
When Carrington sent us an email letting us know how very much she appreciated having these portraits with her son, her happiness thrilled us. Knowing that a client loves their portraits and choose to display one (or more) on the walls of their home just makes us feel so very honored. We strive to make every client happy, and it’s amazing when we receive words of kindness letting us know we’ve succeeded.
A Heartfelt Testimonial
“Do you remember when we first talked on the phone, I shared with you what I wanted to capture? Not only memories but an emotion? Well, both you and your daughter nailed it! I believe it was particularly the 20×24 B&W mounted portrait that truly captured that emotion that I will never forget. It was when Tyler, Orchid and I sat at the end of the wooden platform with our feet hanging above the waters and Tyler said to me, ‘I’m thankful that you understand me.’ To hear him say that to me was GOLD…so precious and rare. Thank you, Mindy and Joriana.” ~ Carrington
It was a privilege to photograph Carrington with her son, and we look forward to seeing them again in the future!
We featured Carrington & Tyler’s session on our blog recently if you’d like to see some more portraits.

Our Happiness Project | Northern VA Family Photographer
Our Happiness Project | Northern VA Family Photographer
Do you know what makes you happy in your life? As a Potomac Falls, VA portrait photography studio, we might be the last people you expect to ask what makes you happy. However, it’s an important question and one that Gretchen Rubin posed in her bestselling book, The Happiness Project. After an epiphany one day, Ms. Rubin realized that life is short and she wasn’t focusing on the things that mattered to her. She dedicated the entire next year to what she called her “Happiness Project” – her exploration of different avenues to being a happier person.
Happiness comes from within ourselves
So, how about you? What makes you happy? We know what makes us happy. Besides our family, our work brings us tremendous joy and happiness. Unlike some people, we are so fortunate to be able to follow and live our passion as photographers. Do you practice what you love each day? Do you work in a job or profession you’re excited to be a part of each day? Sometimes we don’t have a choice and need to work to make ends meet. However, that’s not to say you still can’t find ways to practice happiness in your life. Jobs can be a means to an end while what we do outside of the job can bring joy and meaning to our lives.
We Love What We Do!
We have spent decades building up our clientele and establishing a highly-reputable studio working with families and individuals throughout Northern Virginia. It hasn’t always been easy, and certainly some days were far better or more interesting than others, but we feel incredibly fortunate. We spend our days pursuing an art form we respect and enjoy honing and perfecting. More than that, we enjoy connecting with people and being a part of their lives. We have the privilege of being entrusted with our clients’ important moments in life. Every time we see the happiness we bring others through our work, it’s personally satisfying to us as well!
Seek your happiness in whatever way you can! Start your own happiness project if you haven’t already. Trust us: The hard work on the path to finding happiness will be well worth it! For about 20 years now, we have built our professional lives around our Potomac Falls area portrait photography studio. We would do it all over again if we had to! It’s been OUR happiness project!

Photography Tips & Tricks: Get natural smiles from your kids! | Northern VA Family Photographer
Photography Tips & Tricks: Get natural smiles from your kids! | Northern VA Family Photographer
We’re continuing our portrait photography series for our clients on Tips and Tricks for better photography! Our Potomac Falls, VA and area clients sometimes ask us how to achieve better snapshots. Smiling is one way! The more relaxed everyone is the better the portrait.
So here are some tips for getting children (and Dads, sometimes!) smiling:
Avoid the phony smiles!
1. Don’t try to force a smile. If you try to get your child to smile, if you say “Say cheese,” if you beg, it’s not going to work. Even if they crack a smile, it will appear forced. Shake things up a bit. The more spontaneous you are, the goofier you are, the more likely children are to respond.
2. What makes your child laugh? Tickles? Giggles? Telling them NOT to smile usually works too! Sing a silly song. Better yet, have them sing a silly song and be ready to snap the picture.
3. Every photographer knows that the best photos sometimes come at the most unexpected moments. Our advice is: Always to keep your camera nearby, battery charged, and ready to take a snapshot. If your children are doing something and having loads of fun doing it, pull out that camera and be ready to shoot some great candids. You’re almost guaranteed to get at least a few great shots of them smiling.

Have some fun and be ready to play
4. If you are setting up your personal photo session for your children, it’s going to be tough to get them to smile. What they see is their parent preoccupied in getting everything just right before asking them to pose. How much fun is that for anyone, let alone a child?! Turn the photo session into a fun opportunity with some interactive games or puzzles.
5. Fascinate them! What interests them? Have something ready that you know will captivate them. When you show it to them, make sure you are ready with your camera. Catching pictures of them when they see something that fascinates them will get you some rewarding shots.
Remember, you get maybe one good shot for every dozen or more, so shoot a lot of pictures!

When we shoot family or children’s portraits, we always tell the parents to let us handle the children. Let us be the ones to interact and provide the instructions or guidance. They are far less likely to rebel against us than their parents. Fun is key to kids’ pictures especially the younger ones. We enjoy those sessions as much as the kids end up enjoying them – which is usually quite a lot!
Contact us if you want great portraits of your family and your children — with natural smiles — at our portrait photography studio and outdoor portrait park in Potomac Falls, VA (Sterling, VA). We are just savvy – and goofy – enough with kids to get them grinning chin to chin!

Clivia, Mayra & Enriqueta, Family Portraits | Northern VA Family Photographer
Clivia, Mayra & Enriqueta, Family Portraits | Northern VA Family Photographer
Women tend to bear powerful connections to other women in their lives. When it is three generations of women, then it is all the more powerful! Our dear friend Clivia knows the role photography can play in honoring these relationships, so she contacted us at our studio not far from Lowes Island, VA.
Clivia, who lives with her husband and three older children in Sterling, VA, asked us to photograph three generations of women in her family – her daughter, her mother, and herself. We were honored and excited to work with Clivia and her family! Rather than shoot the portrait in our photography studio, we opted for our Outdoor Portrait Park.
Three Generations
As you can see, the two younger women, Clivia and Mayra, lovingly leaned in and wrapped their arms around their matriarch, Enriqueta. However, what we also see is a beautiful pillar of strength in the center bound by two legacies emulating that force. There is no better example of the power of photography.

Photography, like a painting, can capture something that isn’t possible to do every single moment of our lives. In this case, it is the love and bond between three generations of one family. Clivia’s mother lives some distance away, making it difficult for the three generations to see each other often. Clivia, who’s quite close to her daughter, wanted a personal portrait of the three, their first professional portrait together.
The portrait, depicting the love and bond between them, captures a rare moment for them. All three are together. When they are apart, their portraits serve as a potent reminder of the love that binds a family together.
Outdoor Portrait Park

As a studio, we treasure the role photography plays in the lives of our clients. Photography allows us to capture something worthy of being documented and of being honored. While we took this portrait in the Lowes Island, VA area, if you are within driving distance we would love to work with you. Together, we can document that which you treasure most – your love for your family.

Top 9 Reasons to Book Your Family Portrait This Fall | Northern VA Family Photographer
Top 9 Reasons to Book Your Family Portrait This Fall | Northern VA Family Photographer
Fall isn’t that far off – believe it or not! Have you booked your fall family portraits, yet? The landscape of the Lowes Island, VA and Reston, VA areas are ideal for spectacular fall foliage in your family photos!
Here are our Top 9 Reasons to Schedule Your Professional Family Portraits for the Fall:
1. Fall colors make for gorgeous portraits!
There’s nothing like Virginia in the autumn! A bounty of warm colors flourishes throughout our state before the leaves drop. A Virginia fall provides a lush, warm backdrop for your family portraits.

2. It’s so easy to coordinate with practically any home décor.
Do you favor a neutral color palette in your home? Or maybe you love to decorate with an array of bright tones? Either way, fall’s earthy colors will showcase well in your family portraits no matter what the color of your walls. Whether warm goldens and russets, bright oranges or reds, the possibilities are endless!
3. Fall temperatures are comfortable.
Fall temperatures are ideal for outdoor family portrait sessions. Gone are the hot, humid days of summer, and winter’s bitter days haven’t yet arrived. Most fall days are comfortable for all ages in your family from young to elderly.

4. You still have a little color from the summer sun.
While most of us know better than to spend long summer days tanning, a lot of us still have that sun-kissed glow from summer’s outdoor fun. A little glow goes a long way in your fall family portraits!

5. Clothing coordination made easy!
Fall’s rich and broad palette of colors makes it easy to choose color-coordinated outfits for your entire family. Remember, we’ll help you with that!
6. Accessories!
Oftentimes family portrait sessions are styled with a particular color scheme or look to work within, and the clothing each family member wears needs to coordinate with one another. In the fall, cooler temperatures mean you can do some layering and bring in coordinating colors with accessories, a scarf, a belt, boots, etc. It makes it easier for each person to show off their own unique style, while still staying within the color scheme planned for the portrait.

7. Playing in the fallen leaves is just fun!
Falling leaves combined with rich colors make our Outdoor Portrait Park the perfect playground for outdoor family photos! Kids feel free to revel in the open spaces without the stifling heat of summer. It’s perfect to capture candid moments of laughter and fun. The environment naturally lends itself to fun, casual portraits, showing off your family as they really are.
8. It’s perfect timing for planning gifts.
Fall is the perfect time if you want to use your family photos for seasonal cards and gifts. It gives you (and us) just enough time to do your portrait session, make selections, and return your final products, ready to go!

9. Just because!!
It’s always an excellent opportunity to photograph your cherished family so that years from now you can look back and enjoy what once was. Your children will only be this age once! Don’t wait for life to get in the way. Give yourself and your family the gift of beautiful portraits, heirlooms to be treasured and passed on to future generations.
Are you ready to book and reserve a date for your fall family photos? Call us today to schedule! We look forward to hearing from you.

Pass on your family legacy & bring your old photos back to life | Northern VA Family Photographer
Pass on your family legacy & bring your old photos back to life | Northern VA Family Photographer
There are many ways to tell a story. More than a decade ago, we chose photography as our form of storytelling. It’s not just our profession; it’s our passion here in the Lowes Island, VA area. Long before the invention of photography, written and oral storytelling were how families passed down generations of history. Although those forms remain invaluable today, combining the three is a powerful way to retell our stories through the generations.
Not long ago, our friend and fellow photographer was fortunate enough to experience all three forms of storytelling: oral, written, and photographic. Her story reminded us that many people have old photo albums and pictures collecting dust somewhere. It’s time to pull those out and do something with them!
Our friend, Sabina, had the opportunity to enjoy weeks of visits with a beloved grandmother before the older woman’s passing. During their visits, Sabina and her grandmother sat and looked through old family photos. The older woman recounted memories and the stories behind the pictures. As her grandmother talked, Sabina wrote down her stories. It was a rare opportunity and precious gift from one generation to another.
After her grandmother had passed away, Sabina gathered the stories from her visits, as well as the photos, and created an album for the family. Thanks to Sabina’s visits, the old photos and the stories shared by her grandmother and written down by Sabina, a precious legacy was left by Sabina’s grandmother for future generations of family.
Creating a Legacy
We all have old pictures and old albums (remember those sticky pages and plastic covers?) lying around our homes somewhere. Whether you have an older generation who can share their stories or not, you too can create a legacy by gathering old photos and restoring or scanning them. There are numerous internet companies where you can upload your old photos and create albums.

Share your Story through Pictures
It’s time to tell your family stories through pictures and, more importantly, create your legacy for the next generation in your family. We aren’t all as fortunate as Sabina to have those precious weeks worth of visits with our grandmothers. Use your family photos to document your history. Create new family portraits to tell the story of your family.
If you’d like to do family portraits with Ever After and add to a rich collection of memories through photography, contact us. We are within easy driving distance from Lowes Island, VA and many other Virginia cities and towns. It would be our honor to help you document your family’s story and help pass on your legacy.
