Family Portraits, The Lambert Family | Northern VA Family Photographer
Family Portraits, The Lambert Family | Northern VA Family Photographer
This young family of three (soon to be four with the expected arrival of a baby), the Lamberts had never done a family portrait. Their professional photos had been baby photos of their precious red-curly-haired toddler. The Northern Virginia area family was enjoying their time parenting a toddler while getting ready to welcome a baby son when they contacted us. Ashlyn and Luke were interested in doing candid family portraits in a casual outdoor setting. Having looked at photography websites, they liked our style and decided that we were worth trying. We appreciate that very much!
Although they had done baby photos of their one-and-a-half-year-old happy and chatty daughter, Evelyn, they told us it was time for family photos. Ashlyn mentioned that they were also interested in photos of each parent individually with their daughter. We can’t stress enough what a great idea this is! In families, usually one parent is the “go-to” photographer (often Mom!), and most of the family’s snapshots will feature the other parent. The result is an imbalance of photos! Professional portraits featuring the entire family, as well as individual portraits of each parent with the child or children, help to ensure everyone in a family is captured in pictures. Years later, the children will have pictures featuring both of their parents! We can’t tell you how many times we’ve heard adult children say how much it means to them to have family photos of BOTH parents!

We always ask our clients in their pre-session consult what they want their children to see reflected when they look at those family portraits decades from now. The answer is almost always the same: Parents want their children to see their family’s love depicted in family portraits. That common answer is the most important reason to prioritize your family portraits. Family portraits are an important legacy parents leave for their children, and we always urge parents to order at least one portrait per child in the family. One day each child will have a copy of that beloved family portrait!
After browsing other photography websites, if you find that you like our style, we urge you to contact us. We’d love to work with you and your family on the legacy you will be leaving your cherished children. Our clients hail from throughout the D.C. Metropolitan and Northern Virginia area, including Broad Run Farms, VA.

10 Biggest Regrets – and How to Avoid Them | Northern VA Family Photographer
10 Biggest Regrets – and How to Avoid Them | Northern VA Family Photographer
Not too many photography websites discuss death. We’re not going to either! However, we are going to discuss regret. What are some of the biggest regrets people have in their lives before they die? We ask this because it’s not unusual for us to hear from our clients across the Broad Run Farms and Leesburg, VA areas that they regret waiting so long to take family portraits. Many people have a nice family portrait when their children are very young, but then they have nothing for the intervening years up until there’s a wedding or their children have children! That got us thinking about what sort of things we all regret at some point in our lives.
We’ve never had a client or friend tell us that they regret taking family pictures — or any pictures for that matter. We agree. You really can’t take too many pictures, whether it’s of your family or of your family trips. Portraits capture memories in print. They make them tangible. You can revisit those memories as frequently as you want. Whether it’s often or infrequently doesn’t matter. The point is that you have the pictures, the portraits of your loved ones, to enjoy. You wont ever regret having those portraits!
After a lot of thought, as well as some reading, we’ve created a list of the most common regrets people have before they die. (This list is based on a Forbes magazine article.)
1) Working too much. At the end of their lives, there isn’t one person wishing they had devoted less time to family and more time to work. Spend time with your family and friends while you can. Be sure to have a good work-life balance.
2) Standing up to others. We will all meet a bully at some point in our lives whether it’s social or work related. It’s not unusual for an adult to say how much they regret not speaking up or standing up to a bully even as far back as grade school! They regret not having had the confidence to stick up for themselves or others. Take a deep breath and stand up. Do it for yourself and do it for others.
3) Losing touch. It’s not uncommon to lose touch with others but when it’s that one special friend, it can lead to regrets later in life. Hold tight to your friendships. You won’t always be together in the same city, but within your power to call, write and contact them. So do it!
4) Living in the moment. These days too much technology gets in the way of socializing with others. Put down the screen and interact with other humans before you realize you’ve lost them.
5) Past loves. It’s amazing how many of us look back on that one special person wondering what might have been, or “if only.” It can be hard to enjoy love you might have now if you’re stuck thinking about something that might not have been as good in the long run as you think! Appreciate the love you have, and don’t ever take it for granted.
6) What others think of us. There’s a great book written by a woman who arrives at her 50’s and has an epiphany. Middle age, she says, is a good time to start not caring about what others think of us. In other words, it’s a time to grow up, be ourselves, and not let others bring us down. Stop caring what others think of you because on your death bed it won’t matter.
7) Lack of confidence. Many adults look back regretting a certain lack of confidence which might have led to poor decisions or outcomes. Build up your confidence. Be comfortable with yourself.
8) Living our parents’ version of us. So many young people pursue the careers their parents want them to pursue rather than pursuing their own dreams. Then one day, years later, they look back and realize they’ve lived the life their parents wanted them to. They haven’t lived the life they wanted to live. If your parents want something for you, then do them the honor of spending time and effort deciding if it’s what you really want. But if it isn’t, then be honest about it, and ask for their advice about pursuing your own dreams.
9) That dream job. It’s not unusual to hear adults say they regret not going after that dream job even if it might have ended in failure. You don’t know it until you try it. If that dream job is ever offered to you, take it or you might regret it one day like so many others.
10) Life shouldn’t be so serious. So many people forget to be happy and not take life so seriously. They’re so busy working, caring for others, and just slogging their way through their days that they forget to enjoy their lives and not take everything so seriously. You have one life to live. Live it well.
Hold tight to those you love and enjoy your life! You’ll never regret that.

If you aren’t one of our regular clients, then you’ve probably looked through numerous photography websites. We hope that you’re enjoying our blog and love our work because we can tell you that we love our clients!! If you live anywhere in the Northern Virginia, Broad Run Farms, VA or Leesburg, VA areas, then we’d love to work with you! Tip 5, How to Understand & Work with Your Photographer | Don’t Edit A Photographer’s Images | Northern VA Family Photographer
Tip 5, How to Understand & Work with Your Photographer | Don’t Edit A Photographer’s Images | Northern VA Family Photographer
Tip #5 in our series “How to Understand & Work with Your Photographer” is: Don’t Edit a Photographer’s Images! Professional photography, not belonging to you, should never be edited by anyone but the photographer.
Would you like someone to alter your work after you poured your heart and soul into it, after you’ve spent years crafting your skills? No, of course not! Well, neither would we, nor any other professional photographer we know.
Our Broad Run, VA and Northern Virginia clients would hopefully ask us for edits before attempting them for themselves! We get to know our clients, what they want for their final product, and we strive very hard to give it to them. Retouching is done to any image which a client orders, whether it’s a huge 40×60 wall portrait or a small gift size print. Before anything is sent to print or any product is ordered, a client is asked to view a proof and then sign an approval page. So if there is anything a client wants done to an image before a product is ordered, they have every opportunity to let us know that!
We won’t be offended if asked to “fix” something on an image. Even Michelangelo was asked to make changes to his masterpiece ceiling in the Sistine Chapel! And if such a master would do so, we certainly can too! Our work and final product as a studio photographer are our photographic works of art.
A lot of time, energy, and skill goes into every photograph including the final touches. If you want to see edits done to a picture, it is without a doubt best to ask the photographer. They would be more offended by you making the edits on your own without permission than being asked for some potential edits. And the truth is, it would be rather insulting to any professional photographer for others to change their work. After all, the photographer put the time and effort into those images; it’s only right they she/he be asked by the client to make any edits.
There is a great Reddit forum discussion on this topic you might want to read. You’ll notice almost every response says “check with your photographer” after a user asks if it’s acceptable to do some additional edits to their photos. We completely agree! In this forum discussion, the edits the user is asking about are common practice but should be only done by the photographer creating and producing the portraits – not by the subject of the photos.
Keep in mind that once you begin editing someone else’s work, it isn’t their work any longer. You just removed their creative ownership. We can assure you that as professionals, your photographer will do a far better job of editing than you will. Just ask!
Ever After is a mother and daughter professional photography team in the Broad Run Farms, VA and Sterling, VA area. Our clients extend across Virginia and we are always happy to answer any questions!

10 Tips for Choosing Artwork for Your Home | Northern VA Family Photographer
10 Tips for Choosing Artwork for Your Home | Northern VA Family Photographer
Our Northern Virginia area families, including those in Broad Run Farms, VA, often ask us how they should choose artwork for their homes. Many have visited numerous design and photography websites hoping for inspiration, so we thought we’d offer some tips!
1. Buy and display only what you love. Investors buy art for its potential to rise in value. Collectors, however, buy and display art for the love of the piece, and so should you. Art is personal and you should invest and display art – such as fine art portraiture – that touches your soul in some way. Fine art family portraiture should capture emotion and it should be worthy of your investment.
2. Be open to different mediums. Artwork means many different things, many different mediums. Whether it’s sculpture, oil, or fine art photography, select what works for you, for your home’s design, and for what stirs emotion.
3. Venture out if looking for new art. Great art is often displayed in any number of places from galleries to restaurants to coffee shops. There’s plenty of art available for sale online as well. You can also commission work from a local artist, including a family photographer! There are some stunning pieces available from your local photographer, and beautiful family portraits as artwork will mean more to you than any other kind of art because it’s artwork of those you love and cherish.
4. Pick the right size. Artwork should fit well into its space. It shouldn’t be too large nor too small. You’re striving for balance. If you’re creating a photo gallery wall, create a mock up using paper prior to putting nails into the wall. You can create interest by using a variety of sizes. Here at Ever After, we have specialized design software that allows us to perfectly size your wall art for your home, so nothing is every too large or too small.
5. What’s the focal point? If your artwork will be the focal point, keep that in mind when looking for artwork. If you are considering using fine art family photography to display in a certain spot (I’m sure you know that we feel that’s a wonderful idea!), work with your photographer prior to your portrait session. They can help set up the sessions to create the best portrait for your space, including setting, colors, size, etc.
6. What’s the color? Artwork should ideally coordinate and compliment a room’s colors and design. When selecting artwork for a particular spot, consider the surrounding decor including wall color, furniture, curtains and accessories. Make sure the artwork’s colors coordinate with the room. Even if you want the colors to pop, you need balance.
7. What’s the subject? In most cases, the content of the image should work with its surroundings in the room. The artwork should harmonize with a room, not clash with it. You wouldn’t put a nude oil painting in a children’s playroom, would you?! While an extreme example, you get the idea!
8. Traditional, contemporary or does it matter? You don’t necessarily have to select a traditional piece of art for a traditional room. Sometimes the right contemporary can make a bold statement, and sometimes a traditional piece will look perfect in a contemporary space!
9. Hang it right. People often err by placing artwork too high on a wall when it should be at an approximate eye level. Most art galleries place the center of the painting about 60” from the floor. Try it.
10. Lights! For the greatest emphasis and impact, light your artwork! Great lighting will make it a beautiful and stunning focal point.
If you’ve visited other photography websites, but really like and prefer what you see on our website, we’re happy to photograph your family to create your own beautiful artwork. We work with clients near to (and far from) the Broad Run Farms, VA area. Wall art of your family is always the best investment. These are the people you love, and decorating your home with portraits of family will give you years of enjoyment. You will never regret investing in wall art of those you cherish!

How much should you invest in Family Portraits? | Northern VA Family Photographer
How much should you invest in Family Portraits? | Northern VA Family Photographer
Folks who’ve never paid for professional photography sometimes aren’t quite sure where to begin or how much they should pay. Sometimes they’ll go straight to the cheapest photographer they find, but when the photos come in, they’re immensely disappointed. We’ve been working for years in the Broad Run Farms, VA and Leesburg, VA areas and surrounding communities and have a lot of experience. We can tell you that we’re not surprised cheap “professional” photos usually result in a poor final product. And, we aren’t saying this out of self interest or self promotion; we want our clients to be extremely happy with their portrait session and with the final products they purchase, whether it’s a large piece of wall art or an album or prints. So how much should you invest in family portraits?
As with many other services, you get what you pay for. With a professional photographer, you will be paying for their skill set, their years of training, specialized equipment and technology, and, lastly, you’re paying for experience (that alone can be worth a lot!)
There are many instances in life when you can get a good thing without necessarily having to pay a lot. Sometimes a $10 bottle of wine is just as good as a $20 bottle. But, sometimes it isn’t! Photography is usually the latter: Paying less simply because you can could mean disappointment and wasted time and money.
An article last year on the Angie’s List blog, provided tips on how to select a photographer and the role pricing can play. “Expertise is the main factor that dictates the price a professional photographer charges. With more experience, a professional photographer typically charges more,” according to the article.

Can you find a photographer with little experience who takes great pictures? Yes, you can. However, experience can make an enormous difference outside of technical knowledge – like how to handle and direct children during a portrait session, where and how to stage a session and how to handle multiple, sometimes uncooperative, clients (we all know teens don’t love being in front of any camera but their own!), and so on. Years of experience, technical expertise, and experience are what you get and pay for when you hire a highly-skilled, reputable photographer like Ever After!
So to answer the initial question of “How much should you invest in your family portraits?”: It does depend on your budget, of course, as well as your expectations for the final product. Are you content with a few prints that you will stick in a drawer and very rarely look at? Or do you want a beautiful family portrait finished and ready to hang, one that will be treasured for generations to come?
We’re happy to discuss your questions, your budget, and what we have to offer with our professional photography! Reach out to us if you live anywhere in the Northern Virginia area, especially Broad Run Farms, VA and Leesburg, VA.

Family Photography, The Batterjee Family | Northern VA Family Photographer
Family Photography, The Batterjee Family | Northern VA Family Photographer
Family photography is a large part of what we do as photographers in the Broad Run Farms, VA and Leesburg, VA area. Many of our clients are return customers which of course we love because we enjoy watching their family grow, get older, and change through the years! However, we always enjoy meeting and working with new families and this certainly included The Batterjee Family, a beautiful family of three!
New Family Portrait Session

As with all of our families, we like to ask our clients a series of questions so that we can get to know them a bit before we take their portraits. We also like to understand their motivation behind taking portraits and learn about any vision they might have for the portraits. Like most young families, Huda and Aziz had wedding portraits done years earlier and newborn photos when their adorable baby girl was born. Given that Nadia was 10-months, and growing quickly, they wanted to update their family photographs.
A hobby photographer, Huda told us that they like to travel, and she usually prints at least one landscape portrait of their trip to display in their home. She really appreciates photography and was looking forward to working with a professional photographer to capture her lovely family of three.

Wall Art
Huda shared with us how much they’re enjoying parenthood and how they want to capture their time living in Virginia as their daughter turned a year old. Huda’s idea was to display this family portrait along with other pictures on a photo gallery wall in their home. She was hoping to regularly add to that wall in the home she hoped they’d stay living in for many years.
We greatly enjoyed working with the Huda, Aziz and Nadia. Such wonderful people are truly a joy to meet and photograph!

If you live anywhere in the Leesburg, VA or Broad Run Farms, VA area and are interested in having beautiful, custom family photography done, we hope you’ll contact us! We’d love to chat about your ideas for a family photo.

Is Photography Tangible or Intangible? | Northern VA Family Photographer
Is Photography Tangible or Intangible? | Northern VA Family Photographer
What makes you happy in life? Your loved ones? Your experiences? Your house or your cars? Your Rolex? You’ve probably at some point considered the role of that which is tangible versus intangible in your life. We bet you’ve probably not considered photography as being either one! Both, however, lie at the essence of what defines professional photography – or any photography, for that matter. It is a somewhat philosophical question but to photographers, it is one that matters. Tangible and intangible lie at the essence of portrait photography.
Some of the most profound things in our lives are also the most intangible – like love, respect, affection, grief, and joy. And yet, intangibles often depend on tangibles to exist or to be conveyed – like our children, our spouses or partners, our pets, even our careers or a beautiful garden. To feel those intangible emotions we need a tangible, don’t we? So, back to the question: Is photography a tangible or an intangible part of our lives?
A portrait itself is tangible. You can see it. You can touch it. You order it to be framed or otherwise finished so you can display it. The reasons for wanting or ordering a portrait are likely driven by the intangible: Love, honor, memory, respect, etc. Thus, a portrait is tangible, but it’s completely driven by the intangible.
A portrait, very importantly, should also evoke the intangible. When you look at your parents’ wedding portrait from 40 years ago, what do you feel? Doesn’t joy well up in you to see their happiness? Don’t those emotions sometimes bring up tears?
To professional photographers like us, that link between the tangible and intangible aspects of portrait photography matters tremendously. It’s an honor for us to create a portrait as the tangible evidence of our clients’ love for their families. This is why we put so much thought and time into our work. Creating a careless portrait would be unimaginable to us because we know that when when someone looks at their children’s portraits now and years from now, they will feel a flood of emotions.
So when a client or potential client asks us if they should order portraits for display or settle for a DVD of their pictures, without hesitation we always recommend finished portraits for display. The reason for this, again, goes back to that link between tangible and intangible.
You decided to do professional portraits because you deeply love your family. Why would you not display your portraits? Why put a DVD of them into a drawer where they won’t make you smile, where they won’t remind you of your family’s love, and where they will become something purely intangible to you?
As family photographers to the Broad Run Farms, VA and surrounding areas of Northern Virginia, we always say that portrait photography is one of the most enjoyable gifts you can give yourself and your family as a tangible way of capturing your lives today in this moment, for you to enjoy now and for future generations to cherish.

9 Maryland Towns You Should Spend More Time In | Northern VA Family Photographer
9 Maryland Towns You Should Spend More Time In | Northern VA Family Photographer
Photographers will tell you that there’s so much more to Maryland than Baltimore or nearby Washington, DC or our backyard of Leesburg, VA! If you haven’t set out to explore any of these nine small towns, you could be missing out. They run the gamut from waterfront to sleepy town. Grab your car keys and get going! Don’t forget your camera!
Ellicott City:
This reportedly “haunted” town is situated between Baltimore and DC. From its stone mill buildings to it shopping and a brewpub, you can’t go wrong in this town that has retained much of its historic charm.
If you’re a whiskey lover, check out Judge’s more than 250 varieties.
Berlin:
Not quite like its namesake in Germany, it’s still worth a visit for its architecture and natural setting. Often overlooked by beachgoers heading to the Coast, those who do stop will find historic buildings and a relaxed feeling to this small town. Check out Toy Town Antiques or the old Globe Theater dating back to 1917. The Runaway Bride and Tuck Everlasting both filmed here and no wonder! It’s beautiful!
Hampstead:
If you love photography and history, grab your camera when you visit Hampstead where you can travel back in time along Main St. Hampstead. Stately colonial homes, historic police station, and antique shops dot the small downtown. History buffs will enjoy the Civil War markers throughout town that will take you up to Gettysburg an hour north.
Crisfield:
You can’t go any further south without ending up in Chesapeake Bay. Bordered by Tangier Sound and the Pocomoke River, this is a water-lover’s paradise. It’s referred to as the “crab capital of the world” (we haven’t confirmed this claim, but you can try)! There’s every water sport including fishing, marsh sanctuaries, maritime museums, and, believe it or not, a crab derby every Labor Day! Don’t forget to try the hard blue crabs while in town – to eat, not race!
Eastport:
So near, and yet so far! Eastport is just over the bridge with a far more laid-back feel than Annapolis. You won’t lack for history or beauty here, though. You’ll enjoy the view back toward Annapolis in this town with a resort-like feel. Plenty to do in town from kayak rentals to the Annapolis Maritime Museum and oyster festivals.
Takoma Park:
This might be a DC suburb, but you leave everything behind in this hippie-vibe town. There’s vegetarian-friendly restaurants, vintage clothing stores, yoga studios, and music shops. If that doesn’t sound granola enough for you, check out their annual jazz and folk festivals.
Havre de Grace:
Halfway between Baltimore and Wilmington, Havre de Grace is like a mini New England beach town. From it’s own boardwalk to its newly restored Concord Point Lighthouse. If you love duck decoys, you’ll love the Maritime Museum or Decoy Museum filled with nearly 3,000 wooden decoy ducks.
Monkton:
Drive 20 minutes out from Baltimore toward Monkton and you’ll hit horse country. Stately homes dating to the 1800’s, along with gorgeous countryside and horse farms make up this town. In the summer, you can rent an inner tube and float down the Gunpowder Falls.
Oakland:
This is Oakland, MD, not Oakland, CA – so there’s a big difference. If you love fall colors, head here. There are 54ft waterfalls gush in between the lush autumn leaves at Swallow Falls State Park. Deep Creek Lake here is the state’s largest body of water and a good place to jet ski, go boating, and tubing. Downton Oakland offers art, books, and an old fashioned ice cream parlor in an antique-filled shop.

Can You Truly Put a Value on Family Portraits? | Northern VA Family Photographer
Can You Truly Put a Value on Family Portraits? | Northern VA Family Photographer
Value of Family Portraits
What is the true value of family portraits – or any portraits for that matter? Ask someone who has lost a loved one. They will tell you that they no longer have the person to touch and hold. Every picture, every portrait they have of their loved one is cherished and is priceless. As a photographer, we know the value of a portrait and just what our portraits can capture: love, family and, in many ways, time. You can’t recapture those moments. Having worked in the Leesburg, VA area for years, we have met so many clients grateful they took the time to do family portraits with us when they had the chance.
Clearly, professional family photos will capture what a snapshot or selfie won’t. And, because it’s printed on archival-paper, it will last for a generation and more. But is there any value for you in investing in professional portraits? While we have a vested interested in people paying for professional portraits, we’d honestly tell you that there is tremendous emotional value in having professional pictures taken.
Lasting Memories
As human beings, we have limited capacity for memories. No matter how good our memories, we can’t possibly remember everything. Photographs serve as memory triggers. Look at a picture taken years ago, and chances are it will take you like a time warp to that moment or day when the photo was taken. Do any of your childhood memories resemble a picture you’ve seen? It’s not unusual. Science has shown that pictures can trigger memory.

One of the reasons we are professional photographers is because we appreciate the valuable role family photos play in our lives. Professional family portraits depict families today and memories tomorrow. Simply stated: Photographs capture and create memories. How do you put a value on that?!
Just like the ancient oil portraits were painted out of love and reverence for the subject, the fine art portraits of today are tokens of familial love. They are the newer version of those old stately oil portraits which once graced the walls of the elite mansions and families and were handed down through the generations.
The family fine art portraits we take today are as well-thought out as those oil portraits once were. While we might not be around to see an Ever After fine art portrait hanging generations from now, we know that someone’s family will enjoy them one day many years from now. How do we put a value on that?
As a full-service photographer working in the Leesburg, VA area and beyond, we work with each client and their needs and their budgets. We will have an initial talk to see how we can help you best capture your family’s love in one of our portraits. From there, we can help you plan your photo session and, lastly, your product order. There is no pressure, only partnership to work with you how you like. We hope you will reach out to us to discuss your portraits if you haven’t already!

Family Portraits, Jesse and Amy | Northern VA Family Photographer
Family Portraits, Jesse and Amy | Northern VA Family Photographer
The fun-loving and playful Schnelzer Family, with two active little boys, spend a lot of time outside enjoying the beautiful Northern Virginia weather. Between sports, bike rides, and playtime typical of a family with active little boys, the family found time to prioritize family pictures. They found what they wanted in Ever After Portraits, photographers who specialize in family photos in their own private portrait park near Leesburg, VA.
This handsome, busy family loves to take nature walks and enjoys a lot of outdoor activities. Amy wanted their family pictures to be taken outside in our portrait park, and they wanted the photos to represent them as the family truly is: relaxed, casual, and natural!
Our wooden bridge proved to be just a wonderful spot for their family pictures. Sitting casually together, their family’s love and bond shines from their portrait. The rich outdoor autumn colors create a perfect backdrop for their light-colored outfits. The young family seems to radiate light from the center of the photo!

Bryce and Evan had fun climbing around our old truck, and then lounging on one of our couches. Aren’t they handsome?!

Amy and Jesse knew just where they wanted to display their new family pictures. Amy wanted to update the current centerpiece of the family’s wall of portraits, an older family portrait. For those clients who are unsure where to display their family photos, we can help. Using our specialty software program, we can show them beforehand how portraits will look on any given wall in your home. All a client has to do is send us a picture of the wall. We can upload it into our special software, and voila! You can see what your portrait would like on your wall!
We think we captured this happy family as they truly are and can imagine their portrait hanging in the center of their wall of family photos. There is nothing better to display in your home than your loving family pictures.
As family portrait photographers, Ever After loves working with families from across the Leesburg, VA and Northern Virginia areas to depict their families through beautiful portraits.
